How can Juremy help you comply with EU translation requirements easier?
April 28, 2021

As a freelancer with a background in EU institutional translation, I know that compliance with the stringent consistency and referencing standards of EU institutional translation requires extensive terminology research.

Due to the consistency requirement for example, I must research the Union’s corpus vigilantly to discover precedents of a given term already translated into the target language. Furthermore, to support my choice of a specific term, I need to provide references to already published documents by inserting a relevant hyperlink or document number.

Since I wanted to comply with these quality requirements conscientiously, I found myself spending my Saturday nights looking for various citation fragments on Eur-Lex, or giving up on a Sunday museum tour with a friend visiting from Japan just to be able to finish my project on time, and in the same time using as accurate terminology and references as possible.

I soon realized that if I invest too little time in terminology research, document quality suffers, but if I devote a disproportionate amount of time on researching one specific term and the authentic source thereof, ultimately my work-life balance suffers.

The above problems cried out for a long-term solution, so me and my software engineer partner set out to develop a home-made concordance search tool that is designed for the EU translators’ workflow. This is how Juremy was born.

After experiencing the beneficial effects of Juremy on my own productivity, we decided to go online and make our tool available for everyone interested in speeding up terminology research in the EU corpus and easier annotating.

We gradually added the current functionalities to our program, so in its present form our tool

  • periodically indexes the documents published on EUR-Lex,
  • covers Celex sectors 1, 3, 5 and 6 beyond DGT-TM, and includes IATE entries too,
  • performs concordance search with bilingual paragraph-level results in less than a second,
  • corrects the often misaligned paragraphs in EUR-Lex documents,
  • automatically performs smart fuzzy searches besides exact phrase search,
  • can search using any language pair over the 24 official EU languages,
  • displays relevant document metadata, such as Celex number and Eurovoc topics to streamline the EU terminology research and referencing workflow,
  • makes citation easy by one-click copy of the bilingual document link to clipboard.

As a result, you can immediately see the most relevant matches for a term or phrase in the EU corpus, without spending valuable time on browsing and clicking in various databases.

Ultimately, our goal is to help eliminate the repetitive and laborious tasks from terminology research, and to display the most relevant matches to a given query through intelligent search and filtering. So in the end you only need to creatively synthesize the information surfaced, and you can spend your time saved by Juremy on more in-depth research or just relaxing!
